about
The Art of Soil is a small, woman-owned, family-run business centered around sharing the beauty, importance, and love of soil. By creating & offering soil-based art supplies, we are increasing the accessibility and availability of high-quality, earth-friendly art supplies for those who are interested in learning more about soils and creating with ecologically considerate supplies.
Soils and earth pigments have always been at the core of natural art supplies. What we are creating and sharing here is not new - we are learning from and building upon the knowledge of those who created before us - and those who will continue on after. We use a science-forward approach in creating soil-based watercolors.
Through the Art of Soil, we seek to connect you with soils - and soils with you. By creating small-batch art supplies, made with soils - we are offering an ecologically responsible alternative for your creative material needs.
Several years ago, I (Karen) began experimenting with soil-based crayons and watercolor paints. It started as an activity I could do with my children that allowed me to flex my creative sci-art side at home. As a scientist, I am so fortunate to weave my creative process with the beauty of soils to share information & joy centered around the importance of soil. I hope by using these materials, you’ll gain a greater appreciation of soils leading to greater conservation and care. Together with my husband, Rob, and children, Ingrid and Finley - we pour our hearts and souls into creating unique and meaningful art supplies - made with soil.
We respectfully craft our soil-based watercolors and wooden palettes in Wyoming, USA on the Native homelands of the hinono’eino’ biito’owu’ (Arapaho), Tséstho’e (Cheyenne), and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Sioux) Indigenous communities, past, present, and future.
